Our Latest Commission
Did you know that we offer custom commissions? We just completed a pair of bespoke chairs for a client in Atlanta, and we absolutely love how they turned out.
This client approached us with a challenge. Each room in her home is filled with items of beauty and interest, from civil war photographs to antique quilts. But now she needed a change in her guest room— her “Russian Room”— decorated with images of Russian icons, fairytale boxes and nesting dolls. But then Russia invaded Ukraine, and those objects ceased to delight her.
What was needed, our client decided, was not only a change of décor, but a change of theme. She decided to build a room around her collection of Chinese and Japanese artwork, including an antique kimono and large silk painting of cranes. Then she came to us.
Our first job was to source a pair of chairs to complement her redesign. We found a set of vintage black lacquered Chinoiserie Ming-style chairs in Chicago and went on the hunt for the perfect print to go with them. Our client loves bold design and a touch of whimsy. We found both in this antique Japanese woodblock print from the Edo period (1603-1868) depicting a fortune teller revealing her wares. This print was originally designed for use on a paper fan..
We loved the many contrasting patterns in the image. We positioned the fortune teller on the inside back of the chairs and created a seamless repeat from the purple background pattern for the rest of the upholstery. Our client loves them, and we hope you do, too!
